Sea to Sea Cyclists Raise Funds for Atlantic Coast

Twenty four cyclists are riding across Nicaragua to raise funds and awareness for the victims of Hurricane Felix, which made landfall on the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua as a category 5 hurricane on September 4, 2007. Most of these communities affected were made up of the indigenous Miskito ethnic group. The hurricane’s winds and rainfall delivered a fatal blow to their homes and crops. Rivers overflowed and thousands of families suffered significant losses.

Together, the group, which includes Nicaraguans and North Americans ages 14-63, hopes to raise $100,000 to buy seed to help farmers replant crops that were lost. Christian Reformed World relief Committee (CRWRC) and their local partner Acción Medica Cristiana (AMC) have been working on this project since the hurricane. Through a special arrangement with the Canada Food grains Bank (CFGB), every dollar raised will be matched 4:1 by the Canadian government.

The cyclists began their journey in Puerto Cabezas (Atlantic Coast) on December 29th and will complete the "Sea to Sea" bike trip on January 6th in Pochomil (Pacific coast). Thus far, $41,000 has been raised.
